Bank of the West Classic – A fun filled week of tennis in NorCal!

The Bank of the West Classic never disappoints when it comes to the field of the play. 2016 was no different. Venus Williams fell short of her 50th WTA title to first time WTA champion Johanna Konta. Raquel Atawo and Abigail Spears defeated Darija Durak and Anastasia Rodionova to win the doubles title. USTA NorCal had a ton of fun off the court activities as well. Read on to learn more about all the great events USTA NorCal had this year!

KIDS DAY WHERE THE KIDSRULE!
On July 18, 2016, over 350 kids were invited to participate in the 13th Annual Kids Day at the Bank of the West Classic, Where the Kids Rule!  Hosted by USTA NorCal, in collaboration with IMG, Bank of the West, and USTA Hispanic Engagement Advisory Group, it was a fun filled day with activities for all ability levels – interactive mini tennis games, festive music, prizes, fun competitions, a serving-speed booth, and lunch. A few of the WTA players came by to talk to the kids and autograph Bank of the West Classic posters for them. Katrina Adams, USTA Chairman of the Board, and the USTA NorCal’s Board President, Margie Campbell, also came to partake in the day’s event! In addition to the festivities, the participating grassroots organizations and tennis programs were treated to free day tickets to the tournament so that they were able to watch the pros in action – something most would not otherwise be able to do. USTA NorCal invited groups from all over the Bay Area, and included the Fresno Parks and Recreation, Richmond Parks and Recreation, Booker T. Washington Community Center, and many more who work with inner-city youth.
kids day photo resizeHIGH SCHOOL KIDS DAY
Over 100 kids from 10 Bay Area high schools came to play at the first ever Bank of the West Classic High School Day. USTA NorCal staff were there to greet the players and take them through a full morning of action with some games-based drills. Afterwards, the players enjoyed a free lunch, compliments of Wilson Tennis. For a special treat, players were visited by a local favorite, Cici Bellis! Cici answered some of the high school player’s questions and made a very special announcement to the group. To see a video of that announcement, and other videos and photos from the day, visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ustanorcal.
high school day photo resizeMEMBERSHIP BOOTH
During the entire tournament, USTA NorCal had its robust membership booth on-site, staffed by a team of great volunteers, complete with an autograph session, as well as opportunities to renew or become a new USTA member.  Some event attendees even got the chance to test their serve at the Fast Serve Net with proceeds going to local tennis programs throughout Northern California. A big thanks goes out to all of the people who volunteered their time to help with the membership booth. You are greatly appreciated by us here at USTA Northern California!

njtl photo resizeThe 2016 NJTL Regional Rally welcomed over 250 kids from local organizations and community tennis associations to the Golden Gate Park Tennis Courts in San Francisco for some tennis, food and fun.

After a nice warm up guided by the instructors, the kids were able to learn or perfect their tennis skills with hitting and volley drills as well as serves. DJ Steven was there all day and helped to put on a major dance off in the afternoon. From over 250 kids on the dance floor, it went down to just one.The kids also played limbo, which showed some great flexibility from our players! The kids got to go home with some fun prizes, including three Wilson racquets.
Thank you to all staff, volunteers and the kids of course who helped make this another great NJTL Rally.

The USTA NorCal Gen Gap Tournament, a unique event by its format, took place at Stanford August 27 and 28. Both adults and juniors of all ages and levels came out to play in a fun and competitive environment.

The Gen Gap Tournament is great for players as they get to play opponents of different ages but who are at the same level. Thanks to this innovative format, the playing pool for juniors becomes much greater, giving them more opportunities to play. On top of being a rare event, some families enjoy it because they get to play together. The Gen Gap Tournament matches also counted towards the players Universal Tennis Rating.

14494857_1124565747625763_4188392814685109533_nCongratulations to Team NorCal on a great finish at the 2016 Pacific Coast 10’s Exchange that took place September 23-25, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada!

The 10’s Exchange is a section exchange with 12 of our top 10 and Under players (six boys and six girls) who compete during a  three day round robin tournament, using green balls. Each match include one round of doubles and one round of singles.

Out of six sections (Southwest, Pacific Northwest, SoCal, Intermountain and Hawaii), Team NorCal fought hard and took home second place after only falling short a total of four games to Intermountain, based on the final grand tally among sections. The margin was so small between these two teams, that only two games separated them during their match. The competition as a whole was extremely close with, for instance, a large number of tiebreakers being played against Team SoCal. For the first time in this competition, Team NorCal beat Team SoCal, by clinching a lot of these tiebreakers, for a final score of 59-39.

Great effort and teamwork from all of the players! Check out all the pictures on our Facebook Page!

Modesto Hispanic Community in the spotlight in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month

hits-kids

In an area that doesn’t offer many resources to families, one man decided that he was going to do everything possible to create better opportunities for the kids that call it home. Steven Hurst, ASES (After School Education and Safety) Program Administrator for the Modesto City Schools, dedicates his time to exposing his students to life enrichment activities that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to experience. ASES’s mission is to motivate, encourage and empower students, parents and staff members to recognize and achieve their full individual potential and become productive community members.

To help facilitate this, ASES implemented the USTA NorCal H.I.T.S. program in the school district. Making up 60% of the District, the Hispanic community has responded to it enormously we started with eight sites and 160 kids,” says Hurst. “Last year, all 19 sites carried the H.I.T.S. program and 380 kids participated in it.” With Hurst’s commitment and partnership with USTA NorCal, ASES has enjoyed great success in working towards accomplishing their mission. “I couldn’t have done it without the USTA Diversity and Inclusion Section Grant,” Hurst tells us. “What other after-school program is at no cost to the schools?” Hurst jokes. “But what is amazing is that when we reapplied the second year, the grant covered all 19 schools’ equipment,” Hurst said.

hits-kids-2

Hurst described the positive impact of bringing H.I.T.S. to his kids are exposed to is soccer because it doesn’t cost anything and our area has a lower social economic status in general. There is also a higher concentration of Hispanics who are mostly exposed to soccer as well. And because of that I felt this was a to something new but also gives them great values.”

Steven Hurst also explained that it reinforces everything the teachers talk about in their classrooms. “H.I.T.S. ties really well into our character education class and instead of talking about it, they experience it themselves.” Hurst decided to target 3rd grade almost no programs and activities were available to them. Last year, a H.I.T.S. Jamboree kicked off the program at ten sites which created great excitement from the kids for the upcoming season. “The kids remembered me from tennis and were so enthusiastic about playing tennis after school,” Hurst laughed.

USTA NorCal is dedicated to reaching under served communities and working with people like Steven Hurst to help him achieve his goals in providing quality programs towards creating a positive impact in his community. We are extremely pleased to partner with the Modesto School District and look forward to years of continued success.

2016 USTA NorCal Early Development Camps Highlights

$

Designed to recruit and retain the most promising young athletes, ages 6 to 10, the USTA NorCal Early Development Camps (EDCs) concluded early November after spanning over two months.

USTA NorCal recently held 12 Early Development Camps (EDC) – one series took place in the Bay Area and one in Sacramento. The Sacramento EDC Series and the South Bay EDC Series, run by USTA National Faculty Coaches Todd Dissly and Andrea Barnes, brought out a total of 96 players between the twelve camps.

EDC’s are designed to help recruit, retain and grow the talent pool of junior players ages 6-12 and create a new wave of not only world-class tennis players, but well-rounded individuals in the years to come. Each of the EDC’s are led by six of our top ROG coaches, in addition to the USTA National Faculty Coach for that area. The EDC series in the fall are invitation only, similar to Team USA Sectional Training Camps.

“The EDC’s are a great opportunity not only to work with young players on their technique and tactics, but possibly more importantly allows us also an opportunity to set the stage with players, coaches, and parents in developing positive competitive life skills,” said Dissly who runs the Sacramento EDC Series.

“The Lead Coaches and National staff get together and select themes we feel are important for kids to have when they start playing yellow ball,” said Barnes, who runs the South Bay EDC series. “I thought the camps went really well, they came away with awareness and knowledge of what coaches evaluate and what needs to be developed.”

Throughout the camps, while the kids were on court, National Faculty Coaches Dissly and Barnes gave presentations to the parents about the EDC series and what it means to be involved in a child’s tennis career. Before each camp they emphasized to the kids that the main priority for their experience at the camps was to have fun.

“It is so important that we start players, coaches, and parents off on the right track.  Helping them understand and respect the sportsmanship aspect of the game and that this is a journey not a destination,” said Dissly.  “Winning at 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 has very little impact on where a player will ultimately end up – but the values during this time period can last a lifetime”.

If you have further questions or want more information on the EDC’s, please check out our website!

EAST BAY HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS EXCEL!

$
0
0

How do you get players to practice more on their own? That’s the conundrum that many high school coaches face at the beginning of each season. While some players participate in local programs and tournaments, a majority of them don’t play nor commit to year-round practice.

The East Bay Area has taken the lead by creating an “off-season” USTA Junior Team Tennis league run by parent volunteers and local tennis professionals. The Girls Only league in the spring season had 91 players on 10 teams while the Boys Only league in the fall season had 42 players participate on 7 teams. Cities included Benicia, Orinda, Pleasanton, Richmond, and Vallejo. Teams competed weekly in a number of singles and doubles matches.  Over 80% of the league players had limited experience with USTA tournaments.

Darren Wenger, Junior Team Tennis Specialist for USTA NorCal, stated that “Our section goal is to expand the league in other areas utilizing the availability of local high school courts. Team play is more appealing to these students as it builds confidence; develop relationships, and helps puts winning into perspective.”

Cherryl Silva, Tennis Service Representative for Yolo, Solano, and Contra Costa Counties assisted with organizing the teams and promotions to the high schools. It’s been a passion for her as she’s seen the league players develop their skills. “The players are having fun and it’s great to see more community involvement. We’re looking forward to seeing more players involved next year and expanding the opportunities to middle school students.” Due to their successful first-year, the 1st Co-ed Team Jamboree will be held next month at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill.

So coaches and parents, if you want your players to excel on court, give them more match play. With more players and teams involved in Junior Team Tennis, the future looks bright for high school tennis in all areas of Northern California.

This year, the award ceremony took place at Boomers! in Livermore, CA, December 17, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Players, parents, coaches and USTA NorCal enjoyed a fun night of laser tag, mini golf, go carts or bumper boats on top of having access to a giant arcade game room!

We look forward to seeing everyone back on the courts in 2017.

Meet Marcus McDaniel

Marcus McDaniel with his 3rd place trophy.

USTA NorCal caught up with Marcus McDaniel, 14, from Vacaville, CA, who talked about his experience at the USTA National Winter Championships event and winning the sportsmanship award. “I didn’t know what to expect since I only knew four players, so I tried to focus on what I can do and not what they can do,” Marcus explained.

Even though he hadn’t played in a Level 1 USTA National tournament yet, Marcus had been playing in the Boys 16s Division all last year, making this tournament not entirely pressure free. “I did a lot of local tournaments in the 16s and a few Level 2 tournaments, so it wasn’t completely without pressure. But I stuck to my plan and told myself that I can’t control what they do, only what I do.” Coming back in the playoff match, Marcus regrouped and kept the mentality that got him to the semifinals, falling in the final set 6-2 1-6 4-6.

On top of a great performance on the court, Marcus made a name for himself off the court as well. He received the sportsmanship award in the Boys 16s Division, which meant a lot to him. “The sportsmanship award, to not only me but my entire family, means more than any award you can receive. I would much rather miss out on a ball and receive the sportsmanship award than to get the ball without earning the sportsmanship award.” Wise beyond his years, it was clear that Marcus earned the sportsmanship award. More than just on the court, his attitude is the same off the court. He is well aware that without some of the people around him, playing tennis and traveling wouldn’t be possible. “I want to thank my Mum, my Dad and my coaches for being able to travel, because I couldn’t do it without them,” Marcus said.

5 Facts you didn’t know about Marcus:

  • Fruits are his favorite food
  • Beside tennis, his favorite hobby is soccer
  • He was supposed to be left-handed, but everything was taught right-handed to him
  • He is an outdoor person
  • His favorite part of traveling: experiencing different cultures
